Pigmentation refers to the coloration of the skin, which can occur in various forms and is influenced by the presence and distribution of melanin. Common types of pigmentation include:

  1. Hyperpigmentation: Characterized by darkening of the skin due to excess melanin production, hyperpigmentation can present as freckles, age spots, melasma, or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) caused by acne, injuries, or inflammation.

  2. Hypopigmentation: This condition involves a loss of skin color due to a decrease in melanin production, resulting in lighter patches or spots on the skin. Hypopigmentation can be caused by conditions such as vitiligo, certain medications, or trauma to the skin.

Pigmentation occurs primarily in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, where melanocytes produce melanin pigment. However, certain types of pigmentation, such as melasma, can also involve the dermis layer.
